Race Weekend Schedule – March 14-15, 2015

17 miles Northwest of Weed California on Hwy 97 then 4 miles east on Deer Mountain Road.

FREE EVENT with Free Parking. Be prepared for Winter Driving Conditions and Weather. We recommend carrying Traction Devices. This is an Alcohol and Drug Free Event.

At the WARMING HUT: 8:00 am to around 3 pm each dayThe Warming Hut is where you can: Review the Race Schedule, Times & Standings; Ask questions; Sign the Guest Register; Look at the Trails Map; Check in if you’re a Musher or a Volunteer; Buy a Race Shirt; Last but not least . . . Warm up by the wood stove and visit with family and friends.

Kiwanis Big Blue Concessions: 8 am to 3 pm each day - Delicious, reasonably -priced Foods, Beverages, Snacks and Candies served with a big Kiwanis Smile– The Big Blue Race Food Concessions Booth is a project of the Kiwanis Club of Lake Shastina – All proceeds benefit local non-profit organizations.

Race Schedule for Both Days
Enjoy watching as Mushers prepare their teams for the races and caring for them after they’ve finished. The Mushers are a friendly bunch. Always ask permission to approach a team.

  • 8 am – Mandatory Musher Meeting (This meeting is not open to the public)
    All competing mushers and skijorers must attend. Meet at the Start / Finish Line for Race Rules and Instructions from the Race Marshal, Head Timer, and Parking Boss.
  • 8:30 am – Opening Ceremony – MCs will be howling out times and racer information all day, both days.
  • 9:00 AM Start – SKIJOR (Skier pulled by one or two Sled Dogs) Experienced class – 5.4 mile
  •            followed immediately by 1 mile NOVICE SKIJOR. 
  • 10:00 AM Start – 18.9 mile – OPEN MID – DISTANCE (6 or greater dogs in a team.)
  •             followed immediately by  Start – 13.8 mile – 6 DOG MID-DISTANCE (4-6 Dogs)
  • 11:00 AM Start - 5.4 mile – 1/4 mile KIDS SLED RACE (8-14 year old children) pulled by up to 3 Dog Teams
  • 12:00 PM Start - 5.4 mile –  4 DOG SPRINT Teams (2-4 Dogs)
  • 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM – FREE KIDS RIDES for children 4-10 years old
  • 1:00 PM Start - 5.4 mile –  6 DOG SPRINT Teams (4-6 Dogs)
  • 2:00 PM Start – 8 mile – 8 DOG SPRINT Teams (5-8 Dogs)

SUNDAY ONLYAwards Ceremony & Closing Ceremony – Join us for this special ceremony held in the Warming Hut after the races
