After looking at weather predictions for early February (Warm 45-53°F days, 17-24°F nights with some rain and no snow accumulation), We have decided to cancel our Feb 11-12 races and reschedule them for March 17-18.

Snow Update of Jan. 25 (Need snow)

The storm that came in Jan 19 and dropped snow until Jan 23 down to elevations of 2000 feet has had a warm finish and has in the last few days brought rain to elevations below 6000 feet. If we get and keep at least 12 inches of snow, the races will occur Feb 11-12. I drove out the our race sites today and we do not have sufficient snow at either the Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park race site or our alternate race site at Four Corners Snowmobile Park to hold the races. It has been warm and raining some the past couple of days and our first storm of the season has melted away quickly. If we do not have the races on Feb 11-12 we will run them on March 17-18. You can check for yourself by entering the MacDoel Zip code 96058 on the clicking on our Deer Mtn Snowmobile Park or Four Corners Snowmobile Park Locations. We will make a decision next Tuesday as to whether we are going to postpone the races to March 17-18. We will need either a lot of snow by then or a big cold snowstorm headed our way to have the races Feb. 11-12.

Deer Mountain is about 16 miles south of MacDoel by south of Hebron Mount at 41.57° North, 122.13° West, 5800 feet, Jan 25 snow report: 0-2 inches of snow around the trails, Trails are slush, pavement or mud.

Four Corners is about 20 miles south east of MacDoel between Horse Peak and Hoffman Mount and between Tenant and Lava Beds National Monument at North 41.63°N and 121.73°W, 5300 feet, Jan 25 snow report: 0-5 inches of snow around the trails, the trails mostly covered 2 to 4 inches except where cut to pavement or ice by tire tracks. South trail is closed to auto traffic.

Sled Dogs sing for the snow!

Winter has definitely come to Siskiyou County. About a foot of snow has fallen at Deer Mountain in the first 24 hours of this storm which is forecast to continue until Wednesday January 25. Just in time for the Siskiyou Sled Dog Races scheduled for February 11-12, 2012 at the Deer Mountain/Chuck Best Memorial Snowmobile Park just north of Weed, California, off Hwy. 97. Start/Finish Line for all racing events is Deer Mountain/Chuck Best Snowmobile Park, just north of Weed on Hwy. 97, California. The Siskiyou Sled Dog Races is a free, family-oriented event. Parking is Free. A Warming hut with a wood stove is available. You’re invited to attend!

Dogsled teams come from all over the western states to compete on the challenging trails. Each day the competitions feature: 5 to 18 mile sprint and mid-distance races with 4, 6, and 8 dog teams;. An open-class race (up to 16 dogs); and a two dog skijor race (skiers pulled by dogs).

A fun-filled weekend of wonderful, exciting family experiences are planned in addition to the dogsled races. Learn about mushing. Play with a puppy. Meet the Mushers and their dogs. Build an igloo. Have your picture taken with a sled dog. And More! Food Concessions by the Weed/Lake Shastina Kiwanis Club. Their specialties include “hot dogs” and other warming delights. Buy a race shirt or hat.

After the Races on Saturday – Join competing mushers and race volunteers at the Weed Ale-House/Mt. Shasta Brewery in Weed for a “meet and mingle.”

Awards Ceremony will follow the Races on Sunday at the Deer Mtn./Chuck Best Warming Hut.

If we have sufficient snow on the trail and passable roads, the Free Kids Dog Sled Rides are scheduled for

Sat, December 17, 11am – 2pm

Free 1/4 mile Sled Dog Rides will be given for children 3 to 10 years of age.

Location: About a mile before Mount Shasta Ski Park on Ski Park Highway off Highway 89.

Directions: From Interstate 5 take exit 736 onto Hwy 89, travel 4 miles East on Hwy 89 to the hill crest. Turn North on Ski Park Hwy and travel 3.5 miles. We are at the sharp 90 degree turn a mile before the ski park, 100 yards after the Nordic Center Parking. (map)

Caralee Scala was re-elected to the office of Treasurer

Lisa Campbell was re- elected to the board and will be our Marketing Director

Cheri King was elected to the office of Volunteer Coordinator

Tara Beck was approved to continue on as a board member and elected to the office of Spectator Events Coordinator

Trevor Mitchell approved to continue on as a board member

The 2012 Siskiyou Sled Dog Races are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday February, 2012 at Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park, 17 miles Northeast of Weed on Highway 97 then 4 miles East on Deer Mountain Road. (We have changed from our usual January date to fill in lack of races in February and a glut of races in January,)

Free Kids Sled Dog Rides are scheduled (depending on sufficient snow and road plowing by the Ski Park) for Saturday December 17 at the Snowmobile Park between the Mount Shasta Nordic Center and Mount Shasta Ski Park on Ski Park Highway off Highway 89 between 11 AM to 2 PM.
